It occurs to me to wonder, was the reason Adam was locked up 30 years ago because he tried to kill Kaito once before, perhaps in an effort to prevent Hiro's birth?

We don't know. It may be something that happened because Hiro went back in time. Adam wasn't even mentioned until this season - after Hiro went back in time.

We don't even though that he had any powers before Hiro went back in time. He surely couldn't have reached his (apparent) mid thirties as a Samurai swordsman without noticing he instantly healed from any wound.

Good point. Also on the other hand Adam could very well be older than 400 years, maybe he 'Lost' his memory about his past/powers before he got to japan?
