Right, and the birth mother could also have had a motivation to lie if Adam was the father. Adam she wouldn't want to mess with as we've seen, whereas Nathan's just a flyer and was an easy target for blackmail because of his political career, The birth mom did take off with a chunk of that money, and seemed to be the type who would have slept around back in the day. Even if not, the Company or The 12 could have been running a breeding program with the specific objective of producing a Claire. Maybe immortals are extremely rare. In this scenario it's even possible that Claire's birth mom genuinely believed Nathan was the father.
The show made some dreadfully bad mistakes last season, and one of them was making Peter the uncle of Claire. Making Adam her real father would be a way to undo that. The Matt storyline, where he has the same power as his father, seems to suggest some genetic likelihood of that. The casting of the actor playing Adam also fits better in terms of family resemblance to Claire.
So I'd favor this development, and I'd also favor Hiro going back to save Charlie The Waitress. That'd be equally easy to achieve in terms of the writing, and it would correct another huge mistake of season 1. People are blaming season 2 for the ratings collapse, but the seeds for that were planted in season 1. Characters and their relationship potential were severely damaged. Very few viewers give a frak, and few ever will, about Claire and Flyer Boy, or Peter and Ireland Girl, or Hiro and Ancient Princess, because all three of those important characters (Claire, Peter, Hiro) were basically nuked last season.
Peter and Hiro are also handicapped by being too powerful, and Claire by being too one note. There are ways they could have been dealing with that as well, but instead they chose to power down Hiro last season and send him away for 7 eps this season, give Peter amnesia and send him away this season, and send Claire off to California where the most interesting thing she's done is cut off and grow a new toe. Even if they'd done better on this front though, there's still the lost opportunities from last year that have left these characters and their potential damaged.
If anything good is to come of the ratings collapse, perhaps it'll be a realization that undoing the damage from last season is an option they should be seriously considering. The show may not ever be able to fully get back to where it was last November, but it'd have a better chance versus perhaps continued slow bleeding if they don't.
