Did Adam Monroe exist as a character before Hiro went back and changed history? Presumably Kensai would have immortally turned up in the present even if history had not changed.

I don't recall any sign of Adam being around in season 1. Ofcourse he is only around in season 2 because he didn't cut out his heart.

No I mean did he exist even in principle, or would he have come to exist if not for Hiro's intervention, instead of sitting on a hill in Japan meditating for 400 years (or something.)

I would say he would have existed either way, but his personality and motives have changed due to his interaction with Hiro.

He didn't manifest until Hiro visited him, so he would have lived a normal life and died.
My question is whether he inherited his gene, or was he the first to have the mutation?

I doubt it. The story about Takezo Kenzei 'offering his heart to the dragon' always suggested to me that Takezo Kenzei was like Claire. What kind of person can survive and be conscious after removing his own heart?

How do we know the company exists in the exact same form? We are seeing more of an internal view of the company this season, after Adam existed. Who knows what the company would have been like had Adam never been introduced. Most of the 'company' from season one are dead, accept HRG and the Haitian. We weren't quite sure Mama Petrelli and Hiro's Dad were part of the company in season one, that really wasn't made clear until this

Indications from HRG and what Bob has said to Mohinder are that it is substantially the same. Plus if the writers go around changing whats happened previously in the series willy nilly they run the risk of alienating the audience because in the end nothing will matter.

I think now that we have seen the healing action of both Adam and Claire's blood, it's safe to say that it's their blood that gives them the regenerative ability.
If you cut out your heart, the blood is no longer pumping through your veins to regenerate the rest of the body, so it dies.
But here's a better question to ask
