Was DL Hughley a full-time firefighter or just a volunteer?

According to the time line, he got the job and trained for it in only several weeks. Obviously, he would have been looking for a paying job, so he probably opted for the full training, which should have taken him months to complete. However, he had to pass the training first before getting the job (in the real world).
