The beach was an illusion. The trees were what he saw after he killed Candace, but there was no indication that he was on an island after Candace

Hitting Candace with the mug made him wince with pain. If you then assume that the wide shot of the trees surrounding him was intentional (they could have just showed a bunch of trees from his perspective rather than a zoom out shot that showed us something he couldn't see i.e an expansive jungle) then he would have to have walked a really long way with a fairly serious injury. He then appears to be fine after the plague girl wipes his forehead a bit. (who knew the healing power of Bounty?)

There is more to how he got to the road than we've seen. I suspect that the show has been jumping around within the four months between last season and this one without telling us.
