I thought that was odd too. (Hi! My first post to this group, I believe) I noticed that they used the same sound effects and editing jump cuts when Ma embraced Peter as they did when Matt telepathically told Molly he loves her. By implication, she's a telepath. Or maybe, and this just now occurred to me, Peter's contact with Matt let him read her thoughts. But then why is he picking up images instead of

Angela has shown that she knows how to communicate with telepaths; it's possible that she was sending the images to jog his memory.

Actually - Peter has absorbed all the powers of the Heroes he's been around, so he recalled Matt's ability to read his mom's mind - he saw the memories she had of him, and then it dawned on him that she was his mother.

The clue was in tricky 'rewind' sound effect and quick cut photography.

- TMS Peter = NEO

Not like it's that hard to communicate with someone you know to have telpathic abilities, just think to them. HRG and Claire did the same thing to Matt last season in Company man.

He also has all the powers that Sylar has, other than Illusion, if Sylar did get it. That means he also has super memory, that coupled with celular regeneration and telepathy could be behind it.

Matt might have read her thoughts, but I don't remember Claire specifically thinking something for Matt to pick.

HRG is Company-trained, and has obvious experience with telepaths.

Again, I think this is just another in what seems to be a growing preponderance of cases of people reading more into the show than is there. You don't need to have super powers to regain memories that you've lost to amnesia, especially if it's just psychological or even traumatic. Is it really more interesting to people if his flood of memories is the result of somebody's application of a superpower?

I don't know...that just doesn't add anything to the emotional thrust of that scene for me. Why can't he just remember because he wants to? Think like screenwriters instead of like geeked-out comic fans trying to win an unsolicited No-Prize. It's his mom for crying out loud! If anything or anybody is going to stimulate those buried memories, it should be his mom. Dramatically, that is way more effective than some squirrelly super-powered plot instrument.

He may have been remembering on his own. Remember, it was the first time he'd actually seen anyone from his past.
